Polyphenolic Rich EVOO and Sunscreen

Olive oil’s natural sunscreen properties when used in hair products stem from its unique composition. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants, particularly vitamin E, which plays a crucial role in protecting the skin and hair from environmental stressors, including sun damage. When applied to hair, olive oil forms a protective barrier over the hair shaft. This barrier not only moisturizes and nourishes the hair but also helps to minimize the impact of UV rays.

The presence of certain compounds in olive oil, like oleuropein and squalene, contribute to its protective qualities. These compounds have been found to have photoprotective properties, which means they can help protect the hair from the harmful effects of UV radiation. This is particularly beneficial for the hair, as UV exposure can lead to issues like color fading in dyed hair, dryness, and brittleness.

Moreover, olive oil’s ability to penetrate the hair shaft makes it an effective conditioner and protector. It can help maintain the integrity of the hair under sun exposure, keeping it hydrated and less prone to damage.

It’s important to note, however, that while olive oil provides some degree of natural sun protection, it’s not a substitute for traditional sunscreen products, especially for skin protection. For comprehensive sun protection, especially for prolonged exposure, it’s advisable to use products specifically formulated for sun defense. Nonetheless, incorporating olive oil into hair care routines can offer an additional layer of protection, particularly beneficial for hair health.
